Alton L. Berkey, 100, of Shippensburg, PA., formerly of Johnstown, PA., passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at his home.
He was the son of Jacob D. and Ida E. (Seese) Berkey, born on May 18, 1922 in Johnstown, PA.
Alton was a member of the Ridge Church of the Brethren in Shippensburg, where he was a member of the Men’s and Women’s Bible Class and the Jolly Seniors; a former member of the Roxbury Church of the Brethren in Johnstown were he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Church Treasurer as well as serving on many other committee’s. He was a letter carrier in Johnstown, PA., for over 30 years. Alton was an avid stamp collector belonging to the American Philatelic Society. He love to go camping, put puzzles together, bus trips with his daughter, reading and walking. Alton served in the United States Army during World War ll and also was a member of the American Legion in Shippensburg, PA. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great great-grandfather. Alton was the last surviving member of his generation.
He is survived by his four children, Linda and husband Reid Pletcher of Shippensburg; Wayne and wife Joyce of Johnstown, Daniel of Clymer; Corey and wife Dawn of Hagerstown, 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great- great grandchild.
Alton was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 63 years, Nancy Jean (Cober) Berkey, sisters, Rosanna, Louella, Roberta and brother, William, one son, Gary, and infant twin grandsons
Friends will be received on Thursday, February 23, 2023 from 10 am until the time of his service at 11 am at the Ridge Church of the Brethren in Shippensburg. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. The McCabe~Roof Funeral Home, 565 Franklin St., Clymer PA is assisting the Berkey family.
